Serious injury from makeup is a rare occurrence, according to John Bailey, director of FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors. But it does happen. Good common sense and a few precautions can help consumers protect themselves against hazards associated with the misuse of cosmetics.

* Never drive and apply makeup. Not only does it make for dangerous driving, but hitting a bump in the road and scratching your eyeball can cause bacteria to contaminate the cut and could result in serious injury, including blindness.
* Never share makeup. Always use a new disposable applicator when sampling products at a cosmetics counter. Insist that salespersons clean container openings with alcohol before applying their contents to your skin.
* Never add liquid to a product to bring back its original consistency. Adding other liquids could introduce bacteria that can easily grow out of control.
* Stop using any product that causes an allergic reaction.
* Throw away makeup if the color changes or an odor develops. Preservatives degrade over time and may no longer be able to fight bacteria.
* Do not use eye makeup if you have an eye infection. Throw away all products you were using when you discovered the infection.
* Keep makeup out of sunlight. Light and heat can degrade preservatives.
* Keep makeup containers tightly closed when not in use.
* Never use aerosol beauty products near heat or while smoking because they can ignite. Hairsprays and powders may cause lung damage if inhaled regularly.

I may be shooting myself in the foot by suggesting that ninety percent of the rejuvenation properties of any skin care product may be subjective and due to the placebo effect. But should you care? If it make you ultimately look better and younger does it matter if it does it because you believe it will work or because it alters your skin’s biochemistry.

Anti Aging Skin Care Products, What Every Consumer Should Know. by Loredana

In order for an anti aging skin care product to be effective and safe, manufacturers

must use care when choosing ingredients. Most anti aging skin care products do not perform as they should. And, cosmetic companies seem to forget that our skin is more delicate as we age. So, they include harsh ingredients and chemicals that can increase, rather than decrease the damage that has been done by the years.

It really scares me to think that anyone would buy an anti aging skin care product from HSN or QVC. There is absolutely no way to know what those anti aging skin care products contain. People learn the hard way.

If you read some of the reviews, you will see that there are numerous adverse reactions. In many cases, the lips, eyes and face are drier and look no better than before. And, anti aging skin care products are not cheap, so it’s not like you can afford to just try something else.

But, you are going to be an informed consumer. We are going to tell you what ingredients to look for, as well as those to be avoided. Let’s start with collagen.

An anti aging skin care product that contains collagen fiber is worthless. The stuff was derived from cow hide and designed to be used by surgeons who inject it into the lowest of the skin’s layers. There it acts like air or water in a balloon and stretches out the wrinkles and fine lines. It only lasts for a while. It is not replacing your body’s own collagen fibers. It’s actually replacing some of the fat cells that are lost in that lowest layer as you age.

Now let’s look at alcohol. Most anti aging skin care products contain ethanol, ethyl, methanol, benzyl or isopropyl alcohol. What’s wrong with it? It dries up natural oils, which are in short supply in older faces. That’s one of the problems that cause wrinkles and fine lines in the first place, a loss of natural oil.

Then there are all of the ingredients that are either known to cause cancer or suspected to. If an anti aging skin care product contains any of the following, you would be better off to leave it on the shelf. They are parabens, diethanolamine, monoethanolamine, triethananolamine or the abbreviations DEA, MEA and TEA and dioxane. In many countries around the world, these are either banned or restricted. But, so far, the United States has decided to allow their presence in cosmetics.

It is illogical, when you think about it, because everything that your rub on your face is absorbed through your pores and enters your blood stream. But, let’s move on to what you do want in your anti aging skin care products.

Cynergy TK, an anti aging skin care product containing a patented form of keratin, has been shown in clinical trials to help your body produce more of its own collagen fibers, as well as elastin and new skin-cells. Wakame, a specific type of Japanese sea algae, has proven results that are similar to these.

By increasing levels of hyaluronic acid, it improves elasticity while reducing bags, dryness and irritation. In other words, anti aging skin care products that contain wakame “heal” the damage done by sun and the elements.

Nano-lipobelle H EQ10 is an emulsion containing vitamin E and the nutrient COQ10. As an anti aging skin care product, it has been shown to penetrate multiple skin-layers and soak up free radicals, which are produced when the body is exposed to sun, pollutants and even oxygen. The ingredient has been shown to improve appearance and generate a healthy glow.

Stearyl or cetearyl wax allows your skin to retain more moisture throughout the day. It also creates an ultrafine coating that protects your face from further damage.

It is hard to find anti aging skin care products that contain all of these ingredients. But, it is worth your time to look for them, if you want something safe and effective.

I remember when I was young seeing my mother put fresh cucumber slices on her face as a natural rejuvenatior. Today, I had too much old lettuce in the fridge and I was wondering if it could be used as a face mask. So I massaged my face with the lettuce leaves before throwing them out.

It could be just because they were cold from the refrigeration but it felt good. And understand that about your skin if it feel good the chances are that it is doing your skin good. Anyway, given that lettuce is mostly water with a little minerals and vitamins it can only help your skin.

For my next trick I thoroughly used a blender to liquefy the remainder of the lettuce (it needs to be made into really small bits else you’ll clog the drain) and pored the liquid into the bath and had a green chlorophyll bath. It was different. I have quite a sensitive skin and my skin itches very quickly but this in fact soothed my skin and I feel great and relaxed and I don’t look like the Incredible Hulk either.

On the downside: it did take me a few minutes to clean the bath from the green colouration.

On the plus side: I think the bath is cleaner than it’s been for a long, long time.

Anyway my real point was that you can experiment with neutral green vegetables like cucumber. lettuce for face masks. I imagine avocados would make a fantastic natural moisturizer but I love eating them so much that I’d rather let them moisturize my skin from the inside. Remember that the skin needs the essential fatty acids that ae found in avocados and nuts. The only other thing to remember is that a few nuts are excellent for your health and skin but a handful may give you too many calories and increase your weight.

But a diet of mostly fruits, nuts and vegetables with very little red meat is great for your skin. Fish is great, chicken is OK in moderation and as I mentioned red meat is to be avoided. By the way, junk food, too much alcohol, any smoking and drugs are poisonous for your skin.

You try to look after your skin and to look better when you use a makeup but are your skin care products really safe?

The cosmetic industry went to court to stop the food and drugs agency (FDA) from regulating them before a product is released.

Therefore, the FDA may only take regulatory action iafter it has information to support that a cosmetic is adulterated or misbranded. The agency can take action through the Department of Justice in the federal court system to remove adulterated and misbranded cosmetics from the market.

To stop further shipment of an adulterated or misbranded product, the agency may ask a federal district court to issue a restraining order against the manufacturer or distributor of the violative cosmetic. Violative cosmetics may be subject to seizure. FDA also may initiate criminal action against a person violating the law.

In addition, FDA works closely with the U.S. Customs Service to monitor imports. Under section 801(a) of the FD&C Act, imported cosmetics are subject to review by FDA at the time of entry through U.S. Customs. Products that do not comply with FDA laws and regulations are subject to refusal of admission into the United States. Violative products must be brought into compliance (if feasible), destroyed, or re-exported.

Remember that U.S. Customs Service is so busy that we are worried about the security of this country and that whatever inspection exists did not stop the importation of tainted pet foods and tooth pace from China.
